la fromagerie cheeseroom at christmas
27 years ago I fell in love with one cheese, Beaufort Chalet d’Alpage, while on a skiing holiday in the Savoie. Today there are some 250 cheeses on our list. Many are traditional and all are regional. Some are new with recipes taking note of old techniques but with fresh eyes. It is exciting to see new British cheesemakers bravely creating their own style and showcasing the milk from cattle grazing on fresh pastures, made into what will become British Classics. With this in mind the Cheesemongers and I have put together some great selections for our festive and winter cheeseboards.
There will be old favourites and aged hard cheeses in perfect contrast to the fresher, creamier and rind washed versions; finishing with powerful blue veined cheeses to bring the taste sensations to a great finish. There will be wines, port and beer all carefully chosen for their affinity, and we are already getting excited to be entering this most wonderful time of the year.
the perfect festive cheeseboard
So much is brought to the table during the festive season. However, the cheeseboard need not be an add-on, more a thoughtful and select choice of favourite and rarer cheeses to savour and enjoy en famille, or even more indulgently on your own! Whether a fine cheddar with its crumble breaking down as it melts in the mouth, or a Stilton with its sharp, flinty blue veins threading through the rich buttery cheese, these are happy memories. Whether traditional or pushing the envelope to experience the taste of Swedish Almnas Tegel a hard, fruity cheese, a spicy Bavarian alpine Alpe Bergkase with its smooth chewy, rich and fruity flavours, or an Italian Ragusano cheese from Sicily which embraces a sharp and bosky style from pastures around the Ibli hills; there are so many different ways of enjoying a cheesecourse as part of the meal or on its own accompanied by a glass of wine or the nectar of the Douro Valley – a finely balanced Port.
So, about that Queue… at Christmas the Cheeseroom is transformed into a cavern laden with farmhouse cheese. Our Cheesemongers work swiftly & efficiently but more importantly they make sure that every customer gets one on one service with a dedicated expert to ensure they take home their perfect festive cheese board. It’s busy & bustling and all the shop floor team are on hand to help with all the Christmas preparations, enjoy a coffee, sample some wine, nibble some cheese tasters & enjoy.

Our Café Menus feature stews and hearty broths with Winter Greens, Lentils & Barley, Fondue Savoyarde & Melted Raclette take centre stage alongside soft Parmesan Polenta with Wild mushrooms and January King Cabbage sautéed with Pancetta – all celebrated in our monthly Supper Clubs at Marylebone starting up again after Christmas on 7 January 2019; alongside the Seville Orange, as pans of this breakfast essential bubble away on the stove.
Every year the months inspire us - through season, produce & festivals. And so another year begins… first with an Ode to a Haggis, Burns Night on the 25 January as we march in a Haggis to the sounds of the bagpipes; followed by celebrations of food through Valentines, Easter, Spring, Mother’s Day, Asparagus, Strawberries, Summer Solstice, The Glorious Twelfth, Orchard Fruits, Wild Mushrooms, Pumpkins, Guy Fawkes, Beaujolais Nouveau, Thanksgiving
& then it’s almost time for Christmas…
