Events > St George's day
Whilst synonymous with dragons, knights and of course mushrooms he is not just the patron saint of England but also of Aragon, Catalonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal, Germany and Greece; and of Moscow, Istanbul, Genoa and Venice (second to Saint Mark). He is patron saint of soldiers, archers, cavalry and chivalry, farmers and field workers, riders and saddlers, and he helps those suffering from leprosy, plague and syphilis. In recent years he has been adopted as patron saint of Scouts.
Last year we visited many places outside of the British Isles that St George travelled. In keeping with his travels we first head to Russia through Georgia with Vodka martinis & mini shots of Borscht laced with vodka.
Along the way we look at some of the cheeses from the British Isles that were influenced by the places he visited. From Devon we have Ticklemore, made very much in the style of mountain cheese garroxta in Catalonia, Cardo from Avon is made to an old Portuguese recipe.
We then travel to Ireland as we taste some of the Irish cheeses influenced by the German washed rinds such as Milleens, Ardrahan & Durrus.
Being patron saint of England what could be more English than Kirkhams Lancashire, as we are assured he ventured to Preston (apparently). Not forgetting the king of British blues, Colston Bassett Stilton. The tasting plates will be paired with various wines, beer & Port.
The evening will finish on a decadent note as St George journeys through Greece with a delicate spring dessert of Greek Yoghurt with spring rhubarb and honey.
Born in Turkey, we end our journey where St George's began with a tasting of various scented Turkish delight alongside Le Piantagioni Coffee.
Hosted by Patricia Michelson, this promises to be a delicious and convivial evening with an informative edge.
