Mercatale Val di Pesa, nr Florence 100% Sangiovese. Solatione means literally sun-drenched and this vineyard is bathed in wonderful golden rays to produce stunning wines of complexity and richness. Photographs give visual memory, but when you open a bottle of wine and taste, all the olfactory senses come into play and it is an instant reference and pleasure. This vineyard has the sun but also the soil is 65% limestone to give the wine its elegance, with 35% clay and mud to imbue the wondrous bright ruby colour. The grapes are hand harvested and selected and aged in small barriques before bottling, the darkly purple wine has a wonderful wild berry aroma with spices like juniper, pepper and vanilla and the characteristic tar (hot metallic aromas). The flavours are persistent with fruit at the beginning and then the fine tannins kick in to give a long-lasting finish. This wine will age well and give extreme pleasure for years to come. However, drinking now it will still give plenty of fruit and depth of flavours.
