Events > Apple Day Tasting Event
Wednesday 21st is Apple Day, now a national event celebrating apples, orchards and local distinctiveness. It is a way of demonstrating in a fun way, the variety and richness that can be produced in a locality and how it is possible to affect change wherever we live, whether city, town or village.
This year we are delighted to be co-hosting our annual Apple Day event with Jojo Tulloh. Jojo is the food editor of the current affairs magazine, The Week. In between this, raising a family and managing a garden allotment she is also the author of a very beautiful book:Freshly Picked: kitchen garden cooking in the city
Through her book, Jojo takes us to her inner-city allotment and guides us through a year of cooking, inspired by the food that has sprung from her surprisingly fertile patch of East London waste-ground.
In the tradition of passionate food writers from MFK Fisher to Simon Hopkinson, Freshly Picked is an enchanting book - illustrated with photographs and engravings - about simple, delicious, seasonal food.
For this evening Jojo will be talking about her book along with a demonstration of one of her recipes. Guests will then enjoy a delicious seasonal tasting of autumnal produce featuring produce grown on Jojo's allotment alongside some stunning Heritage apple varieties.
Guests will enjoy beetroot soup with courgette flowers, followed by a salad of bitter leaves with toasted cobnuts, Heritage apples and Ryefield toasts.
Patricia will then conduct a tutored tasting of some of the best Autumnal cheeses from the British Isles paired with caraway seed biscuits and homemade spiced apple chutney - using recipes from Jojo's book. Each course will be paired with a cider or wine.
Supper will finish on a decedent note with an apple tart with wild apple jelly glaze.
This promises to be a delicious and delightful tasting event as we engage with food, get back to the land and relish the delights of eating food fresh from the ground all whilst celebrating Apple Day - now in its 20th year!.
Jojo's book Freshly Picked, was published in June of this year by Chatto & Windus: Signed copies of her book will be available on the evening priced at £20.00
